We know that summer is the time of sunshine, warmth, and outdoor adventures! It's also the time of the year when our skin is exposed to high levels of damaging UVA and UVB rays that lead to premature aging, fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, and can even cause skin cancer. We also experience summer's trademark balmy, humid air, warm temperatures, and higher levels of sebum and perspiration. All of these factors combined can leave our skin overly saturated with oil or moisture and unprotected from the additional sun if we don't make adjustments to our skin care regimen and summer time treatments.

Here are some of our favorite tips and tricks for ensuring you have the healthiest skin during the summer as well as some of our favorite products to help get you through the upcoming warmer months!

Wear Sunscreen & Cover Up

Sunscreen should be an essential part of you skin care routine year round, but is extremely important during the summertime months due to additional sun exposure and elongated time outside. When it comes time to select the right product to use, we recommend choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30. Our two favorite sunscreens are Bioelements Raydefense that features an SPF of 30 and Bioelements FaceScreen that features an SPF of 50. Both of these products should be applied a minimum of 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every 2 hours if in direct sunlight. It's important to also cover up as much of your skin as possible when outside.

Stay Hydrated

With the warmer months we know that we will be perspiring more than we normally do, which will cause our bodies to become dehydrated faster. This can also lead to your skin becoming overly dry and tight as well as several other health concerns. So, the moral of the story? Drink lots of water!

Moisturize

During the winter months we've been using products with high moisture content and moisture-binding ingredients to help keep the moisture within the skin. During the summertime months these fantastic products may be too heavy for our skin and could leave us feeling overly moisturized, oily, and even 'greasy'. It's still important to continue to moisturize the skin to keep it healthy, supple, and radiant. During the summer we suggest switching to a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer like Bioelements Beyond Hydration that leaves the skin refreshingly hydrated, but never greasy.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation can be broken down into two different different categories, either chemical or manual. Both kinds of exfoliants feature ingredients that help to remove dead skin cells that leave the skin dead, dull, and can build up on the skin causing unwanted texture. During the summer it's important to continue exfoliating your skin, but you must be cautious to not overdo it. This freshly exfoliated skin can be easier to burn or damaged so we recommend using a mild exfoliant like Bioelements Quick Refiner for chemical exfoliants and Measured Micrograins+ for manual exfoliants.
